Self-help – for some people this word sets off alarms. “Self-help,” they say, “That’s a bunch of baloney.” Or, “No way am I getting into that stuff, it’s all a load of BS.”
That saddens me but I get it. I felt the same way.
And sometimes when I get my hands on some materials out there even I have to go, “Jeez, this guy’s too much.”
BUT…and it’s an important but, that’s not most people.
Life is full of bad examples in every profession.
There are lawyers out there just to take your money, salesmen that are liars, psychologists that are quacks, teachers that are idiots, bad chefs, lousy doctors and yes, there are self-help gurus that are all about themselves and their ego, along with a handful of dough while they’re at it.
So does that mean we should shun the entire industry?
Can you imagine going to one dentist and getting a bad filling and then saying, “Well, I’m never going to another dentist ever again?!”
That would be a BIG mistake and that I don’t doubt would land you in some severe pain somewhere down the tracks.
Instead, just say NEXT.
That’s what we do with salesmen, lawyers, chefs. And yet, when it comes to self-development we don’t even give them a chance.
Here’s what I’ve found when it comes to the self-help industry. A few are blatantly trying to get your money and at the same time not give you much for it. They mislead, overexaggerate and are an insult to the profession BUT there are a lot of people out there that want to do good.
Me, I’m a new author in the industry and I will tell you straight up that one of my dreams is to become a…millionaire.
Now hear me out.
Why I want to be a millionaire is important.
It’s not because I want to drive a fancy car. I could care less. My 13-year old Forester runs quite nicely thank you very much.
It’s not cuz I want to brag by inviting my friends over to my mansion.
No, the reason is this. By becoming a millionaire, I can help others become a millionaire.
That’s it. How cool would that be? To be able to provide a blueprint from where I came from to riches.
Most gurus start sharing their blueprint after they have made it, me, I’m sharing it with you as I go because I want people to see I’m just like anybody else.
You get to see where I started and witness my achievements.
In June I published my first book, iSucceed: secrets for the average joe and jane, and in a few short weeks I’ll be opening the door to my first house.
I’m sharing that with you because I believe that you’ll see that anyone can do it, if we make a few simple changes in our lives like the ones that I talk about in iSucceed.
And the day that I become a millionaire, I’ll post it here and let you know that if I’m able to do it, anyone can.
To me, find the people that walk the talk and that spend their time honing their craft.
Do your research. Don’t get pulled in by smooth-talkers and get-rich-quick schemes.
Find the people that really want to give you value for your money, then find out who they like and branch out from there.
That’s how it started for me and while I have bought a few clunkers here and there, I am more than satisfied with 95% of my investments in self-help material.
I have no doubt in my mind that if you had the chance to listen to just some of the materials in my audio/video library that you would not have to look very hard to find something that would help you achieve your goals.
Don’t let the negative side dissuade you, there is some incredible material out there just waiting for you.
Good hunting!
