A friend called me up the other day to tell me how much they enjoy my website.
It’s always nice to hear as I spent quite some time setting it up and then even more time working on my posts.
When I mentioned that I had done it all with the help of a friend they were quite impressed and asked me how one goes about learning how to create a website.
After I finishing the call I sat there for a few minutes and thought, “I bet some of readers would like to start their own website but just don’t know how.”
So here I am writing a little entry on things to consider when creating your own site.
First off, we must remember that we’re not back in the 90s when the internet was just getting started.
Today there are millions of sites and so if you think that you can just throw something together and have it make money you’ve got another thing coming.
Go with something that interests you, that way you’ll be able to keep it going.
Second, find the right name for your site.
My first book’s title is, as you know, “iSucceed: secrets for the average joe and jane” but iSucceed.com was taken so I had to either change my title or find another site name.
I came up with a few suitable ones – with isucceedbook.com being selected.
Third, go with either WordPress.org or Squarespace.
Both are powerful tools for creating blogs and getting your message out there.
And both cost you less than a nice pair of shoes.
And both allow YOU to design your own page and manage it without having to pay for outside consulting (which can really add up).
Fourth, get some training. Take your website seriously and spend some time training yourself how to make it better.
Invest in your future. Don’t be afraid to spend some money doing so.
Fifth, keep it going. It takes time to build a business. Building one online is no different.
Sixth, get feedback. Ask friends for suggestions and ideas.
Seventh, and most important, get started.
Any questions?
